Purathur Grama Panchayat, located in Tirur Block, Tirur Taluk, Malappuram District, has received the Nirmal Puraskar Award for the year 2009.

Government of India launched the Nirmal Gram Puraskar in 2003–04 to encourage villages and local bodies to become Open Defecation Free (ODF) and maintain good sanitation and cleanliness.

Purpose

The award recognizes:

• Gram Panchayats
• Block Panchayats
• Zilla Panchayats
• Institutions and communities

that achieve:

• 100% sanitation coverage
• toilet usage by all households
• clean village environment
• proper solid and liquid waste management. 

Rewards

Awardees received:

• cash prizes,
• certificates,
• national recognition from the President of India or Government ministries. 

Importance

The scheme became one of India’s major rural sanitation movements before the later Swachh Bharat Mission campaign. It motivated thousands of villages across India to improve hygiene and public health.
